Travertine Travertine is a natural stone made from calcite, or a compressed limestone and steam. Harder compressions of limestone without steam results in marble. It is sometimes known as travertine limestone, or travertine marble; even though it is neither limestone nor marble. It is deposited from the water of mineral springs (especially hot springs). It is often beautifully colored and banded as a result of the presence of iron compounds in the stone. Travertine can be purchased "filled" or "unfilled." It can be effectively polished to a smooth, shiny finish or honed to produce a more natural sheen. It comes in a variety of colors from gray to coral-red |
